High Five magazine is one I had never heard of until Mom bought Sofia a subscription about 3 years ago. It is from the makers of Highlights, a magazine I remember never liking. My childhood dentist carried it and I found it overwhelmingly wordy and only liked the hidden picture pages, which were usually already circled and marked up by other kids in the office. So I was a little doubtful about Sof getting it. She was a little young at the time, and I thought we wouldn't get into it, but she was thrilled when she got mail and thought that Grandma herself had put it in the mail for her. She started saying things like, "It is so nice that Grandma thinks of me each month and sends this, we should send her a thank you card!" Every month! I finally had to explain to her how subscriptions work-I hated to do it. We would always call Mom when it arrived and Sof would tell her about it or get her to help cut out the card game or mini book from the back. Each month has a poem and a cute cartoon about a dog named Spot. There is a series about Tex and Indy and thier cat, Cow. I especially love the Spanish-English story that is in each issue! There are always cute poems for the seasons, you know how I love anything seasonal, and of course a hidden picture page, with a nursery rhyme! Love that the most, especially when Sofia gets mad if I find things first, so I'd pretend I can't find any--sometimes I don't have to pretend! There is usually a craft and a recipe for a simple snack-- which we make on occasion-- the frozen yogurt sundae for breakfast is a fave!
| Here is our version of the yogurt breakfast, not really frozen this time and turk-i-fied for last Thanksgiving! |
Every December a calendar with great calendar stickers arrives with the issue-you know how I love calendars... and stickers to boot? I heart it! Sofia and I would usually spend a good 2 or 3 sittings when she was younger finding each holiday and adding in family birthdays--why don't calendars come with stickers anymore??--and I swear it added to her awareness of time passsing and learning about the changing months and seasons. She would often check it out and count how many days til Christmas or daddy's birthday, etc. I think I am going to subscribe to it for my classroom next year! I just put a bunch of back issues in a box to sneak off to school after the break, when Sof isn't looking! She wants to save them all! I don't blame her! It has really been a fun thing to share with her and Grandpa has kept on "sending" them for us, I can't wait for the next issue!

Sounds like you enjoy this magazine as much (or more) than Sof! :)
