31/365: Snow day?!

We have NOT had a snow day all year!  LOTS of snow and not even the hint of calling off a day of school--so unfair!  About 3-4 days ago the weather reporters began tracking this big storm across the country with a chance of it hitting here.  I began by ignoring, showing no interest, having no faith that any significant snow could come our way--it snows everyday in Rochester, big whoop.  As the big day approached, I began paying more attention, the reporters might be right after all, should we hope?  Yesterday, the whisperings and rumblings were beginning with cries of "Don't jinx it!"  Then the frenzy was clinched, all day today you could feel it in the air, the very chance of a snow day electrified the students, staff and any parents who happened by (--all aided naturally by the media and news programs leading with weather reporters and stories about what to do to prepare-will I really run out of milk?  And if I do, will it matter--my cereal will be a little dryer than normal. and....?!) All day I found myself glancing out the window at the clouds gathering. After we got our daily 3 inches of big whoop and I wondered, could it really happen??  My students had all caught the bug by this time and many teachers were caught thinking and saying, "See you Thursday!", or "We will do that on Thursday", rather than tomorrow!  So tonight I go to bed with the hope of one free day at home to get caught up, be lazy, build forts with blankets and play board games, following "Sofia rules." Not to mention reading and crafting and blogging and watching my shows, I could cram a week's worth of intentions into one little day.  But it is one little important day, one little gift for us to stop our usual Wednesday routine and to slow down and stay home!!  Nice!

Here is a book that sums up what could really happen tomorrow:

I almost got a chance to read it to my kids this afternoon when a few buses were going to be late, but I didn't get past the second page.  I left school with promises from the literacy coach that she WOULD be reading to my kids during her time with us tomorrow, almost more of a safeguard plan in effort to not jinx it than an actual lesson plan!  If you come across it, pick it up and read it or buy it!  It is a perfect account of what I have been going through this snowy winter, Lester Laminack really understands!  My fingers are crossed but under the advice of a former student, now in 3rd grade: I do not have my pjs on inside out and I didn't put ice cubes in the toilet and there will be no spoons in the freezer.  She is convinced those superstitions are what causes the reverse effect and we will have school if we try not to. Reverse psychology at it finest! So I am headed to bed, also trying to reverse my psychology to not get my hopes up for a day off!
