1. We have just survived report card week at school, this involves not only assessing and assessing assessments, but dealing with the technology involved to report our assessing. I feel like it was really the technology piece that threw me for a loop this time around. Honestly, the process of assessing and evaluating my students' growth was and is very therapeutic for me. I enjoy the reflection and like the fresh start and direction it gives me for students and their needs. But the technology, ensuring that I had the time and space to log into our program and to stay connected to the site to keep all of my hard work saved was part of it, but then ensuring that the right people got the right versions printed and in their hands at the right time was rough! So all in all I have to say that I am thrilled to be home today, a pretty gloomy Saturday outside my window, but with only homey things to do, not computer-work things to tackle. No place to go, nothing to do but chores and reading and being a little lazy.
2. I am content not only with the prospect of staying home, but also without feeling like I have to be supermom. Now this is going to sound absolutely horrible: Sofia has a fever and only feels like moving from the couch to the floor to play quietly then back to the couch, and I am relieved. There will be no play dates, there will be no jumping, hopping, throwing things in the house, no cries of take me here or there and no crazy homemade bands and parades. Most of that stuff I love, really I do, but today it just seems right to couch out and nap and watch shows and be quiet. Sofia just invented a new smoothie concoction including an orange, a little banana and strawberry, vanilla yogurt, ice and apple juice, I have to say it is yummy! So concocting smoothies and snuggling up seems about perfect today!
3. I have had a little time to blog stalk today too, I love to check out the blogs of other first grade teachers, there is a slew of them out there, all with awesome ideas they so generously share, highly enjoyable to visit and view!
4. Today I also plan to get some housework done and possible finish a crafty project or two. I'm liking that.
5. Tonight German and I are having a date for which I may actually put on a little make-up! Looking forward to that!
Things that I am concerned about and trying to feel hopeful about are:
I am feeling connected to the world through the TV and Internet. I am keeping abreast of developments in Japan and the Pacific Ocean, praying for recovery for those in the earthquake and its aftermath.
My thoughts are also with my sister-in-law's family as her Grammy is in the hospital.
I am feeling the worry and uncertainty of many teachers, friends, colleagues and co-workers and even my own husband who are worried about their jobs for the coming school year. This week was a double whammy with report cards and the start of budget season. Many talented, well-educated people were informed of changes in their positions or elimination of their positions yesterday. And there are many others who haven't heard, yet--hopeful that they are high enough on the seniority list to stay. It is a very tough time to be in right now. Hanging on to hope!
